[Your editor managed to delete great swaths of text with this post of Susan’s. So, unusually, we are reissuing in its corrected state. There is additional (very worthwhile!) commentary before and after the images. Ed. Red-faced!]

On July 27th I participated in the Watercolour Card Making Workshop with Robin Patterson at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum. The workshop sounded intriguing and the cost was rather negligible. So I thought, ‘Why not give it a try’ even though I haven’t done any artistic-type painting since I was a kid (finger painting and paint-by-numbers!).

It was a fun afternoon, and I was pleasantly surprised at my accomplishments. Who knows — I may end up participating in some upcoming CAGAC art show!! [We’d be in favour of that, Susan! Ed.]

First try was a buttercup which I think turned out a bit heavy-handed for a watercolour, but hey! this was the first time I’d had an artist’s paintbrush in my hand in more than 65 years.

Second up was a wild field rose – a bit more light-handed I think, but … hmmm … I’d better not give up my day job!!

Now my third attempt was somewhat of a mistake. Robin had been talking about painting a thistle but when she started to explain our third attempt, I guess I wasn’t paying attention. She was giving instructions for painting chicory and I, completely on my own, started on the thistle. Halfway through I looked up and saw what she had on the whiteboard and said “oops!” Robin said not to worry, I could do the chicory whilst the rest of the class next did the thistle.

Well, I went rogue again with my 4th effort. My gardens are resplendent with coneflowers and I wanted to try my hand at painting that and I loved the results (with no guidance from Robin).

PS: I have since bought a small set of watercolour paints and who knows where that might lead?!?

  1. This is a fun post to read. I very much enjoyed leading this workshop at the museum.
There are a number of reasons that I love what I do. One is to inspire others to take up the brush or the pencil, whatever medium, and just create! The other is to inspire enough self confidence to continue on one’s own. A few participants from that day have contacted me to ask about the supplies we used, where to get them…because they want to continue!

We were only able to complete 4 of the 12 examples that I supplied. I’d love to see more, Susan! Let me know if you work on the other 8 flowers that were in your packet! I am so happy to read that you will be continuing!

  2. Robin, I’ve done the lupine from your selection and also malva from my garden. Then my daughter was telling me about wet on wet so I did a very colourful grouping of jellyfish (I followed a video for that technique). And since then I’ve been doing practice pieces from a watercolour technique book that my daughter gave me. I am really enjoying this process and Thank you very much for the inspiration.
