How hard can it be?!  Some look at abstracts and say “My two-year-old could do that.”  Abstracts, good abstracts are hard to do so that they look cohesive, balanced, interesting, engaging.  I’ve been trying and not particularly successfully.  I find that I have trouble making shapes (Again, how hard can it be?!)  I am fascinated by line and get lost in the details; I find I want some structure yet when I try that the piece seems to lack energy.  My shapes look blobby and mushy.

So I’ve been investigating shapes, using photographs, cropping down to interesting shapes and/or colour combinations. I’m also using collage to help in the process.  I took a cut up painting and dropped the pieces on a surface.  Maybe something will engage in my brain and filter down through my arm to the canvas with energy and purpose.

  1. Yes, abstract is really not as easy as one would think. But you do abstract really well, Lynne. I suffer from “Ayers abstract envy.” Love the “collage pieces dropped on surface”. Beautiful!
