Collectif Creativity: 18Oct2023

by Hélène Céré

The Collective’s last Coffee House, with guest speaker Sean George, not only got me thinking about how I look at landscapes and nature, but also at art.

I have been stuck for a while, not finding inspiration, or maybe trying just too hard to work myself into a style.

I decided to listen to what my surroundings are telling me.  So, I got my camera out and went for a walk at Cooper’s Marsh.  The day was bright and sunny.  I walked around admiring all of the beautiful nature around me.  There was so much to see, to capture, and to feel.

As I took pictures, I realized that I was just framing them the old same way.  I was getting my usual landscape pictures, nice but not much more.  The snapshots were not delivering the complexity and richness of what I was seeing. Then I decided to take a few shots differently.  What a surprise when I got back home and reviewed them.  I found two that spoke to me in a strong way and I am sharing these here with you.

This first one is looking through the opening of one of the lookouts.

The other, I wanted to take a shot straight down.  Then I saw my feet in the viewer and thought: let’s take it anyway I can always crop it later.  I think cropping it would have been a mistake!

  1. Beautiful pictures and reflections. I like your starting point Hélène. Thanks for sharing this with us. I’m going to go through Sean George’s messages. Stay tuned for my takeaway. Maybe, it will be orange. Who knows?

  2. His talk also made me pause too, Hélène. The framing of these images gives them a sense of place which adds much to their appeal.
