Collectif Challenge 1Sep2024: Meli melo / hodge podge

September’s challenge is Celestial / Le défi du mois septembre est Céleste

By Laura Peck Ah Ah !

Firstly, I learned that hodge podge meant méli-mélo.

Secondly, This amazing word totally  describes the process I am using as I prepare for the Mini Merry juried show of the Cline Gallery in Cornwall.

– I selected stamps – they all are about Christmas

– I chose to make them as a background

–  I then pick among a limited variety for the letters.

This one turned out as Peace and Joy. It’s the second of the series of 5 which I just finished last night.

This morning, I feel peaceful. Will I be joyful when the gallery announces their choice?

By Milo Smith For the challenge I went rummaging for something suitable.  I came across this image taken at the Lost Villages Museum.

The items  are truly mixed.  The old Empire typewriter, the Eaton’s catalogue from 1927, the Seaway commemorative plate from the 50’s, and undated but obviously old portrait, the blue glass “thing” from the 50’s again and, of course, the furniture.  Images like these make visiting museums interesting.

By Susan Irving Here are a couple of photos for Hodge Podge.  The first, Assortment, is some interesting stuff that was left in the garage when we moved here.

The second, That Thing,  is something we discovered in the woods behind our house when we first moved to Green Valley. It has since been taken away for scrap. Not really sure exactly what it was!

By Lynne Ayers Tallinn is taken from the ramparts looking down on the streets of the Estonian city of Tallinn.

I’m an Antique was taken at the flea market in St. Telesphore. I spent an afternoon there just taking photos of ‘stuff’.

The Bazaar started out as one thing and morphed into this. It’s a hodgepodge of collage. 18 x 14″ on wood panel.

What Goes ‘Round just happened in play, a méli mélo of collage, acrylic, mark making on watercolour paper mounted on masonite. It lounges in my studio wondering if it’s finished and worth the cost of professional framing.

  1. What a diversity of hodge-podge pictures, paintings and boards. I like that. I am so looking forward to seeing and reading about the September celestial inspiration. Thanks for challenging us, Yvonne.

  2. What a superb example of hodge-podge/meli-melo in Susan’s photo of “That Thing”.
It gets my vote for Best of Show 🙂
Great work by everyone in deciphering the theme.

    • In retrospect, I kind of wish we had kept it as some sort of “indefinable garden object” and maybe spray painted it fuchsia or in rainbow colours. Hindsight is 20/20.
