I took out a photo of a 2011 family reunion and fondly remembered my uncle. So I started by sketching him a few times then gradually took out my oils.
Funny things happen sometimes; no matter how I tried to use thick oil colours I kept cleaning off my board and this is the result.
He was a soft spoken, gentle, quiet man and I liked him a lot even though we didn’t see him regularly. I hope that his “essence” portrays him well.

Given your description of your uncle, I think you portrayed him well. I love the textures in the background.
