Covid Creativity: 25May2021

by Flip Flockton

Intrigued with what a very basic ‘artistic’ computer program can do, I then fiddled around more to create a new bathroom floor, which follows next!  All in all, a most enjoyable way to spend an afternoon!

Now I need to connect with Collective members, who creatively use computer programs to produce different effects in their paintings and photographs. What programs do they use?

Lockdown Doodles from the Bathroom Floor!

Much to my surprise, the completion of a family history (and an aversion to anything remotely connected to spring-cleaning) combined with late April snow and lockdown triggered some unexpected free time and creativity. For years, I have enjoyed discovering hidden images of faces and animals in clouds, and suddenly I had an overwhelming urge to capture such images as I saw in the patterned flooring in my bathroom!  This sparked a number of unanticipated developments.

First, I drew and painted in watercolour four images I saw in the flooring.

Originally, I thought these images could be used to illustrate (hopefully) witty stories. The first idea fizzled out: an unnamed dog (or a human wearing a dog mask) with a mysterious blue stripe at the vet for a grooming trim, together with humans desperate for a post-lockdown haircut. After which, full writer’s block set in!  Instead, I decided to scan the drawings and play around with the limited artistic options on my ancient version of WORD, which was great fun and an eye-opener!

Collectif members want to see your work! Send JPG images of work completed since March 2020 to cagac.ca@gmail.com with up to 100 words per image describing what you did, materials used, inspiration, etc. Maybe share how you’re feeling more than a year into the Covid experience & how/if creativity helps. Give us informative, inspiring show & tell. Writers, send us poetry, lyrics, a short piece or excerpt and try to include a suitable illustration of some sort. Thank you!

  1. One can lose hours at this sort of stuff, Flip, but I have used Photoscape and Fotosketcher as well as Microsoft’s basic Paint program.

(For me it’s faces in my bathroom cabinet – there’s an old man with a fantastic beard living there.)

  2. What fun, Flip! I do play with computer programs, but mainly to draw and paint, rather than to manipulate photos. My favourite is Microsoft Fresh Paint, which is a free app. Also there is a fellow with long hair and a beard carrying a back pack on my living room ceiling.

  3. I haven’t done much manipulating of photos, but you’ve made me want to explore it further! A fun way to while away the hours! I love what you’ve done!
