By Katie Ditschun
Recently, I have been spending more time song writing and practising my piano. A couple of weeks ago, I completed and performed a live release of my newest song, “HER.”
“HER“ is a tribute to my late mother. I had reached a point in my grief where I was able to sit down and write lyrics that would speak to what life is like without her. During the song writing process I endeavoured to make my lyrics relatable to anyone who has suffered the loss of someone dear to them. I also hoped to remind listeners that what keeps us going through the hard times is love.
Days come and go
Life rearranges
Everything’s the same, but with changes
Oh what she’s missing
The things she’s missed
Seems a long expanding list
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
The kids are taller, getting smarter and smarter
Another year has come and gone
From the looking glass
Love will take us
Through the darkness into dawn
We’ll go on
Browsing through photos
I focus on faces
‘Cause over time, of course, memory erases
What was her preference
Not sure I recall
But I do remember she loved the fall
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
The kids are taller, getting stronger and stronger
Another year has come and gone
From the looking glass
Love will take us
Through the darkness into dawn
We’ll go on
Life’s big – we endure
With one thing missing
her
The cover photo for “HER” is a piece of art that hangs behind me in the video. It is a painting of mine that I gifted to my mom for her last birthday. “Flowers for Mom” is one of my first attempts at still life. Even though my dad absolutely loves it, after mom was gone, he insisted that I keep it. It hangs in my kitchen and reminds me of how much she believed in me.

During this time of social distancing I’ve been working hard to keep myself from feeling socially isolated. Apart from having the opportunity for more practise and song writing, I’ve been offering free virtual voice lessons via Facebook and posting performances to my social media accounts.
I’d like to wish all mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day.
